The woman in hand-me-down armour and threadbare boots almost felt bad for the flock of Corsairs laid out on the ground.

Her travelling companion, a woman in a grey cloak, got up from the rock she was sitting on and came to stand next to her.

'What was their first mistake?' she asked.

Threadbare Boots pondered the question. \qThey underestimated us!\q she declared. \qThey saw two travellers and thought six people would be enough to best us.\q She smiled triumphantly.

'Close, but not quite correct. They did underestimate our strength, yes, but they made a bigger mistake first.' She gave Threadbare Boots a few moments to consider, but the silence stretched a little too long.

'Look at us,' Grey Cloak said. 'Do we look like we are worth robbing? I wear a dull cloak and your armour is scuffed and dented. We travel with light packs that could not hold more than two days' worth of supplies. What could we possibly have that is worth risking a confrontation? It would have been better to save their strength for a better target like a merchant with a cart full of goods.'

'But a merchant would employ an escort,\q Threadbare Boots retorted.

'And? A beast is only as hale as the prey it devours. A hard fight is worth the risk if the spoils are commensurate. If you are to make it as one of us, you would do well to remember that.'
