Soldiers who fell in battle have been brought back as horrifying wights to fight against their fellows.
'Must we now fight our own? By some dark necromancy, Sauron has infused the bodies of our fallen with vile spirits and brought them back to fight their former brethren. These were once good Men and Elves, but now they move without thought, animated by vile spirits. We must slay these wights, and put an end to this worst affront of Sauron.'
